Kemper Nomland was interned during WWII at CPS Camp 56, Waldport, OR.
"I was influenced [to become a Conscientious Objector] by different things I read, I suppose, when I was young. And I know in college I was influenced by reading about different Pacifists and their ideas. People like Bertrand Russell and other people like that. Of course, there was quite a bit of material available about the anti-war movement at the time, that would be the early 30s. And I just didn't want to have anything to do with people being killed. So I didn't want to join an organization that was set up for that purpose. So I wasn't going to go."
Kemper painting at Waldport CPS Camp. The CO sitting for the portrait is Henry Carlsen.
